Number and place value
We have been looking at the value of numbers and what their worth is, depending on where they are placed in columns. In Year 2, we focus on numbers up to 100, so we are mainly looking at 2 digit numbers, using the tens and ones columns. It is important for children to understand the value of numbers, before they can start to add or subtract or do anything else with them. We are aiming to get children secure in this understanding because this will then help the children when we come to using numbers in different areas of maths, such as measurement.
At home, you could use the number splat game online, tell your child a number and then get them to splat it. You could also ask them what is 1 more or 1 less than that number and 10 more and 10 less than it.
In Year 2 we focus on learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Times tables is not only important for being able to recite it, but it also helps with word problems and figuring out multiples of objects. TTRockstars is still being used this year in school and your child's log in details are on the first page of their reading record book. As your child will be leaving their book at school over the weekend, it might be worthwhile making a note of their details so that they can access this resource at home at the weekend. The link is below.
At home, you could allow your child time to access TTRockstars or practise saying the times tables together.
