Multiplication

This week in maths we have looked at multiplication. We looked at repeated addition as a method of working out multiplication. Children also showed there knowledge of timestables as we covered our 2s, 5s, and 10s.

SUBTRACTION

This week we have completed our chapter on subtraction, ready to move onto multiplication next week. It has been very difficult as we have three methods for subtraction. We aim for the children to have at least one method that they can use. I have attached the text book pages from the lessons that show the column method if you would like to ask questions please do so.

TIMES TABLES

We have practised the 5 times tables again this week and we are starting to understand the pattern that for each next multiple, we add on 5. The more you children practise these, the more fluent they will become.

SUBTRACTION

This week we have been looking at different methods of subtracting. The children have been learning to use number-lines and hundred squares to support their learning. We then moved on to subtracting by using number bonds and the part-part-whole method.

TIMES TABLES

We are starting to look at the 2 times tables now in class 4 so it would be great if you allowed your child to access TTRockstars, as well as practise counting in 2s

ADDITION

Due to SATs this week, we haven't taught the children new skills but rather recapped our prior learning. Next week we will be continuing our addition chapter and will be teaching the children how to use column addition for adding 2 digit numbers.

TTROCKSTARS

Children have been accessing TTRockstars in class and have been having a times tables test based on 10 times tables weekly. Please allow your child time to practise these at home. After half term we will be learning our 2 times tables.

## Arithmetic home tests

This week we have started working on addition with 1 and 2 digit numbers. We have used rulers as number lines and been adding on to make the number bigger and we have also been using a whole-part-part method to separate our tens and ones. This has helped with adding the ones together first and then the tens.

NUMBER AND PLACE VALUE

The children have been working so hard with our first chapter of Maths No Problem, as they have been working with numbers up to 100. They have had to read and write numbers, ordering them and notice patterns with them. Next week however, we are moving on to addition with numbers up to 100, which will be a great challenge.

At home, see if your child can choose three 2 digit numbers randomly and then ordering them from greatest to smallest.

TIMES TABLES

We have been concentrating a lot on our 10 times tables in class and have now started having a times tables test on a Friday. Children have time during the week to access TTRockstars but it would be great if they had some extra time on this at home. Times tables helps with lots of mathematical problems, so the more practise, the better.

At home, go on TTRockstars or practise writing the 10 times tables in order.
